Abstrakt

The first digital library Europeana began functioning in November 2008. The library has made up one-mile step in digitizing and popularizing European cultural heritage. The article describes the cause, process of formation, union financial programmes and essential aspects of functioning of the largest European gathering. The Europeana has a polyglot aim and general access to digitized textual, graphic and audio-visual documents, photos, museum objects and archival materials. Therefore, special attention in the article is turned on three main elements of this project; digitizing, online access and preservation.
